Welcome to Iceland. Pick up your pre-booked rental car at Keflavik International Airport. Always guarantee to have a car that allows you to drive on every road. Full coverage insurance is also advised.
Time to download the app that will be your guide and road map for the entire stay.
If time allows, explore the rugged Reykjanes peninsula on your way to Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital.
Highlights of the day include Reykjanestá bird cliff, Gunnuhver hot spring – named after an angry ghost, Brimketill rock pool by the ocean, the Brimketill rock pool and colourful Krýsuvík hot spring area.
Accommodation: Laugarbakki Hotel (Standard Room)
Go north to the Hvammstangi area for an overnight.
Visit Borgarfjörður along the way.
We recommend the Settlment center in Borgarnes, Reykholt medieval site, Deildartunguhver hot spring, Krauma baths and Hraunfossar waterfalls.
Activity: Krauma – Admission.
Accommodation: Siglunes Guesthouse (Standard Room)
Your Arctic Coast Way self-drive tour starts here.
Begin by driving around the Vatnsnes peninsula. Highlights include the village Hvammstangi, known for its Seal center, Hvítserkur bird cliff, and Borgarvirki fortress.
Another recommended stop is the Kolugljúfur canyon.
After going through the town of Blönduós you continue along the coastline of Skagi where you will enter the village of Skagaströnd.
Further along the Skagi peninsula you can visit Kálfhamarsvík beach and have a bath at Grettislaug on Reykjaströnd.
The ferry to Drangey Island departs from Reykajströnd if you are interested.
Accommodation: Brekka Guesthouse (Standard Room)
Today you will travel along the Tröllaskagi peninsula and over to the Eyjafjörður area, home to Akureyri “the capital of the north”.
End the day in the area of Húsavík village, famous for everything whale – such as whale watching and whale museum.
We highly recommend a stop at the Hofsós public swimming pool, awarded for its architecture.
At the Hofsós emigration centre you can learn about the immigration of a third of Iceland’s population to Canada and the US in the late 18 hundreds.
Near Dalvík you can take a detour into the picturesque Svarfaðardalur valley where the mountains feel huge and up-close.
Accommodation: Norðurljós Hotel (Standard Room)
From the Husavik area you continue along Tjörnes peninsula where you can enjoy a cup of coffee at the Tungulending guesthouse, located in a remarkable environment.
Before driving around Melrakkaslétta we recommend a visit to Ásbyrgi National Park.
Left Kópasker village behind, solitude and pristine nature uncontested prevail. Beaches full of driftwood, lakes and ponds, moors, basaltic black stacks, and cliffs are what await you here, together with a rich fauna among which an impressively high number of birds rule the roost.
In northwestern Melrakkaslétta is the isolated cape of Rauðinúpur, a red shade ice age volcano, which stretches into the sea with a peculiar shape.
The two promontories of Rifstangi and Hraunhafnartangi compete to be the northernmost spot of the mainland.
The first one probably wins the title by a couple of centimeters, but the second one has a lighthouse at its end which tickles the Arctic Circle less than 3km away.
South of village Raufarhöfn, at the end of Melrakkaslétta, is located Rauðanes, a small cape which offers the best short hike in the area.
From Þórshöfn you can travel to Langanes peninsula (4×4 only) and visit Skoravíkurbjarg bird cliff and Skálar, the village that once was a vital part of Iceland’s maritime past.
Accommodation: North Hotel (Standard Room)
Today you will make your way to Egilsstaðir.
Along the way, you can visit Burstafell Museum, a turf farm near Vopnafjörður or go swimming in Selárdalur, an outdoor swimming pool with an extraordinary view.
Sandvík Black Beach also attracts many visitors.
From Vopnafjörður you have the option of driving to Hellisheiði Eystri, a mountain road offering a great view over the Héraðsflói Bay.
Return the rental car to Egilsstaðir domestic airport. Time to say goodbye to Iceland.
